Creating Custom Artwork for the Live United Campaign: A Journey with an Arizona Artist

When United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona commissioned me to create artwork for their Live United campaign, I was honored to contribute my artistic skills to a cause that profoundly impacts our community. As an Arizona artist, I wanted to craft a piece that captured the vibrancy, resilience, and beauty of Tucson’s desert landscape, aligning perfectly with the campaign’s message of growth and unity.

Concept Development: Crafting the Desert Scene

The foundation of this custom artwork began with inspiration from the Sonoran Desert in bloom. I curated images of desert flora I’ve photographed over the years—vivid wildflowers, majestic saguaros, and blooming prickly pears. I already sell floral greeting cards. because I love painting flowers so much!

Using Adobe Illustrator, I digitally collaged these photos into a cohesive composition that became the blueprint for the painting. This stage allowed me to refine the balance of colors, shapes, and elements before transferring the vision onto canvas.

Organizing My Desert Inspiration

The creative process started by exploring Tucson’s breathtaking beauty. I organized photos of cactus blooms, wildflowers, and other desert features to create the foundation for this custom painting commission.

Sketching the Layout onto the Canvas

Next, I arranged the desert elements into a vibrant, harmonious composition using Adobe Illustrator. The layout was designed with versatility, ensuring it would translate beautifully into merchandise like T-shirts and mugs for the Live United campaign. Once finalized, I transferred the design to the canvas, sketching with soft yellow paint to create a guiding framework.

Painting Process: Bringing the Vision to Life

Laying the Foundation of the Art

I began by applying light washes of acrylic paint to establish the tone and bring energy to the canvas. This foundation hinted at the vibrant desert blooms and set the stage for the scene’s deeper layers.

Building Depth and Dimension on Canvas

I added more vibrant colors and shadows layer by layer, giving the scene depth and realism. The desert landscape transformed with each stroke, evoking a dynamic and immersive quality.

Adding Details to the Painting

This step was all about the intricate details. I painted hummingbirds, saguaro blossoms, and the rugged shades of distant mountains, infusing the artwork with life and movement. These details captured the essence of a desert morning, making the painting feel alive.

The Finished Piece: A Symbol of Unity and Growth

The final painting radiates the spirit of Tucson, with its warm tones and flourishing plant life. As an Arizona artist, I focused on creating a piece that reflects the resilience of the desert—a perfect metaphor for the Live United campaign’s mission to uplift individuals and families.

After over 20 hours of meticulous work, I added the final details, such as cactus spines, flower stamens, and textured highlights, giving the painting a polished, luminous finish.

A Celebration of Art and Community in Arizona

Delivering this custom artwork to United Way this fall was incredibly fulfilling. Seeing the piece become part of their campaign inspired me to reflect on the transformative power of art. Desert blooms, with their resilience and beauty, symbolize hope, growth, and unity.
